PowerCuts.IN is an initiative to crowdsource information about Power Cuts in India. The project aims to crowdsource, primarily from twitter and other mediums like Mobile Web, SMS, Smartphone Apps, information about the Power Cuts happening in India since the summer of 2011. The primary aim of the website is to collect data from people and make it accessible in various formats and provide it back for public use.
The data is crowd sourced and belongs to the crowd and is licensed under Public Domain Dedication and License, which means anyone is free:
1. To Share: To copy, distribute and use the database.
2. To Create: To produce works from the database.
3. To Adapt: To modify, transform and build upon the database.
Without any restriction, as the data is generated by the crowd(people) it belongs to them.

What's the point?
This has many potential uses in developing a better understanding of demand for electricity; it also highlights where there is a need for investment in power production and supply. Citizens can use the data to ask their power supplier company sharp questions. We are now combining this data with news reports about lost productivity as well as potential ways to use cleaner alternative energy sources. Policy makers can use this information to think about how to address India's growing need for power to continue its industrialisation and urbanisation plans. Energy companies can use this data for aggregate supply tracking. The data is Public Domain so any one with access to the internet can use the data, depending on their particular angle.
The community(crowd) is also putting in their suggestions on various uses of this data on this open document. Add yours!
